
Jim Hallenbeck is President and CEO of Black Hills AI, a leading provider of intellectual property management, docketing, and paralegal services.
Jim is a licensed attorney in Iowa and Minnesota and a registered patent attorney. In over 20 years of patent practice, Jim focused on patent portfolio construction and prosecution in various technology areas, including complex computer software systems and IP operations.
Jim is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics related to IP practice, including evolving legal issues, IP operations, the modern economics of IP firm management, and leveraging technology to improve the quality, efficiency, and speed of IP practice.
Jim is passionate about sharing his insights, experiences, and best practices with the IP community. As a speaker, author, and board member of several IP associations and foundations, his mission is to empower IP owners and practitioners to navigate the complex and evolving challenges of the competitive and dynamic IP market.
Before joining Black Hills AI, Jim was a Principal and Attorney at Schwegman Lundberg & Woessner.
Prior to his law career, Jim worked as a software engineer and analyst, designing and developing global software systems supporting a wide range of industries, including financial services, automotive, and insurance. Additionally, Jim spent over five years as a United States Marine.
Education
Jim received a B.S. in Computer Information Systems from Chapman University in Orange, California (B.S., cum laude, 1998) and a Juris Doctorate from William Mitchell College of Law (J.D., 2004).
